Galvanic Zinc anodes are used for cathodic protection of more noble metals and alloys. The first recorded use of sacrificial anodes was recorded when Sir Humphrey Davey had zinc plates installed on the copper sheathed hulls of British naval vessels in 1824. From this inauspicious beginning, the science of cathodic protection evolved not only in sea water, but also in a multitude of electrolytes including soils.
